Lesson 8

Digitization and voice, image, manipulation in today's educational environment.

A good graphics program and tools associated with capturing still or moving images and converting them into a digital format is gaining acceptance as commonplace in today's learning classroom. In gathering images there are a number of sources available;
  • Scanner
  • Digital camera
  • Snag It - screen capture
  • Video Camera
  • Vlogs, youtube and other web sources
  • Screencasts and webcasts
*
However a solid professional paint programme is a major investment and most schools are not giving due process to considering the validity of a robust, scalable image manipulation application in every classroom. Considering the wide application of digital cameras, scanners and simply the use of presentation software, the need for a suitable program to manipulate what images you have captured becomes a mandatory component in classrooms. In addition sources like United Streaming (heart video) videos, screencasts, YouTube and others are more prevalent on the web today. Bandwidth has increased and the size of video file are decreasing due to advances in compression techniques and streaming protocols. It is not feasible to watch live internet video in many classrooms.

Some tools and resources:

SnagIt – screen capture program that is a must for creating multimedia files
Camtasia – offers the option of capturing screen for creating a training video
Google Notebook – Online version of drag and drop text and links
Skype – for instant messaging and other multiple tools
Paint Shop Pro – for graphics manipulation and browsing text
Flickr – online photo storage and album tool

The connected classroom.

Today’s connected multimedia classroom is one that utilizes several aspects of either voice or video to enhance the learning for students. Once again the focus is not the tools but more importantly do these tools offer resources or capabilities that will be useful for learning in the classroom. The QEP contains several components and is increasingly making use of these tools in curriculum areas. In addition they are used to support school processes. For example, I find that taking a video of your own teaching and then reflecting on the components of the video is one of the most powerful reflective teaching tools for professional development. Use of video and digital images are powerful teaching tools if used appropriately. Thus the challenge is not to use the tools but effectively blend them into an instructional framework that is motivational, instructional, meaningful and for which learning can be assessed.
